At first, I tried using a pattern to define the scales, but it didn't work with the shape of the body, so I ended up placing each one of the scales by hand in the texture. Congrats to you and your wife!

Katie - I'm not sure how to explain lurpy. I used it a lot growing up, and it kind of became it's own word. I guess the best way to describe it would be goofy or awkward in appearance or the way they act... It helps and I'll make sure to look for that during with my next 3D model.
I like using the basic shapes to get what I want. When I get better at moving points around, I hope to have more detail in my 3D models. Although the star looks pretty basic it actually took me a long time to get it right. :( Is there a "star" shape in Maya that I'm missing?digital randyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00368651123112973476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297794377060845752.post-8413991104462577822009-08-26T08:13:49.737-06:002009-08-26T08:13:49.737-06:00Hey, Randy! Great to have you on board. I think ...Hey, Randy! Great to have you on board. I think you will be able to learn a lot from these guys.

For a first model, this is nice. It looks like you used a lot of basic shapes to capture your character. When starting 3D, using basic shapes to get the hang of things is great way to get your feet wet. So, good job. :)

As far as things you can improve, one of the first things that caught my eye was that your resolution (or geometry topology) is a bit inconsistant throughout the character. In the eye and mouth, your geometry looks like it has a lot of polygons; while the body is very low-poly. Where the body of the fish is the biggest part of the fish, it should have a higher ratio of polygons compared to smaller parts (like the eyes and mouth). Does that make sense?

Other than that, I like what you've done so far, and am excited to see more from you!Ryan Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09391571522874782601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297794377060845752.post-17616835887725616782009-08-13T11:07:57.359-06:002009-08-13T11:07:57.359-06:00nice dude! like always very nice modeling and text...nice dude! like always very nice modeling and texturing skills. thats fuuny you guys picked the same type of dog.Joehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07585732329970094651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297794377060845752.post-88518158116915011992009-08-13T00:08:01.261-06:002009-08-13T00:08:01.261-06:00Truth be told, the reason that I did a doberman wa...Truth be told, the reason that I did a doberman was because I saw it on a clip from the Underdog movie and thought it would be a good choice. :)

And, thanks for the compliment.Ryan Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09391571522874782601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297794377060845752.post-36587271815687346232009-08-13T00:05:37.750-06:002009-08-13T00:05:37.750-06:00hahaha i actually laughed when i saw your post cau...hahaha i actually laughed when i saw your post cause of the dog choice.
